Reasonable Adjustments

Do you need adjustments at work because of a disability or health condition?

Employers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments where a disabled worker is placed at a substantial disadvantage. Requests are most effective when they are specific, evidenced and linked clearly to the disadvantage.

Typical situations

  • You need changes to hours, duties, equipment or the working environment.
  • Your employer says the adjustment is not reasonable.
  • Adjustments were agreed but are not being implemented.

Practical first steps

  • Put the request in writing and explain the disadvantage it addresses.
  • Ask for an occupational health referral if appropriate.
  • Keep a record of the response and any delays.

How WorkplaceDisputes.uk may assist

  • Drafting or reviewing a reasonable adjustments request.
  • Preparing for meetings about adjustments.
  • Advising where a refusal may form part of a wider claim.
